How do I use FTP via a command prompt?

The below steps will explain how to FTP to your server using Windows command prompt.


1. Go to the Start Menu and Click Run...type cmd and click OK
2. The Windows Command Prompt will open. Type the following command to connect to your server:

ftp yourdomain.com


Where yourdomain.com is your domain or the FTP Server IP Address.

3. Once you hit Enter it will attempt to connect to the server. If it is successful, you will be prompted for a username and password. Enter the FTP username and password information to login.


4. Once you have logged in, you should see a ftp prompt like ftp>

5. To list the Directory Contents, use the command dir

ABOR - abort a file transfer
CWD - change working directory

DELE - delete a remote file
LIST - list remote files
MDTM - return the modification time of a file
MKD - make a remote directory
NLST - name list of remote directory
PASS - send password
PASV - enter passive mode

PORT - open a data port

QUIT - terminate the connection
RETR - retrieve a remote file
RMD - remove a remote directory
RNFR - rename from
RNTO - rename to
SITE - site-specific commands

SIZE - return the size of a file
STOR - store a file on the remote host
